  • Online Journal Subscription
    Student members may choose to recieve JOSA A, JOSA B, Optics Letters or the Journal of Optical Networking free of charge, OR you may select Applied Optics, published two times a month for $26 - a 50% reduction.
  • Free OPN Subscription
    Optics & Photonics News (OPN), OSA's monthly news magazine, blends industry reports and in-depth features with timely technical articles accessible to the entire optics and photonics community.
  • Free Physics Today Subscription
    Through its affiliation with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), OSA offers its members a complimentary subscription to Physics Today, an important, informative monthly resource.
  • Email Alias
    This service enables members to synchronize any email address with their OSA address. That way, if you move or frequently change email accounts you do not have to inform all your colleagues and contacts.
  • OSA Journals
    In addition to one free online journal, Student Members receive special discounts on OSA's fine collection of peer-reviewed books and journals, such as JOSA A, JOSA B, Optics Letters, Applied Optics, Journal of Lightwave Technology and OSA co-published journals.
  • Discounted Registration
    Student members attend OSA conferences, exhibits and educational sessions at reduced registration rates. The OSA Annual Meeting, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) and more than 20 topical meetings are among the many annual events hosted by OSA.

    OSA's high-powered career search engine is dedicated to serving the recruiting and job placement needs of its membership. Industry employment trend updates, customized job searches by geography, title or employer, and a targeted resume bank are a few of the site's many features.
  • Employment Center
    A highlight of the OSA Annual Meeting and large conferences, the Employment Center gives students an opportunity to review job openings, interview with top companies and participate in a resume bank.
  • Student Chapters
    OSA Student Chapters provide you with an important link to your academic colleagues. These chapters enable you to build credentials and participate in important local activities and educational projects. OSA supports its Student Chapters with information resources, activities and financial assistance. Students are encouraged to join their institution's Student Chapter (link). If your school does not have a chapter, OSA will help you to form one.
  • Technical Groups
    OSA members are encouraged to join up to five Technical Groups. This excellent networking opportunity will ensure that you receive information about events and publications directly related to your areas of interest.
  • Online Student Forum
    Through the OSA Web site, student members can directly contact experts in a variety of technical and application areas. Use this important resource to gain insight from OSA members with expertise in industry, government and academia (link).

  • Youth Science Education Outreach Grants - The OSA Foundation provides Education Outreach Grants to support the grassroots education efforts of OSA chapters. Grant applications are due by October 31st for programs taking place between January and June; and by April 15th for programs taking place between July and December.   • Free Outreach Materials – The OSA Foundation and the Rochester Local Section of OSA are pleased to provide OSA Student Chapters with a free Optics Suitcase to help with education outreach programs! The Optics Suitcase is an innovative, interactive presentation package designed to introduce middle school students to many of the concepts of optics as well as other sciences. The Suitcase includes instructions and materials needed for several experiments and demonstrations. Click here for the application.   • Leadership Conference - A representative from each chapter receives a travel grant to attend the annual Student Chapter Leadership Conference that is held in concert with OSA’s Annual Meeting, “Frontiers in Optics.” The Leadership Meeting and Frontiers in Optics activities include technical and professional development sessions along with many opportunities for networking.

  • Traveling Lecturer Program - Student chapters are eligible to request a visit from a traveling speaker annually.

  • Excellence Award - The Excellence Awards program was established to recognize the outstanding achievements of OSA’s Student Chapters and Local Sections for advocacy and outreach efforts in their local communities as well as academic and professional development programming for members. Presented annually at Frontiers in Optics (FiO), two Student Chapters and two Local Sections receive an Excellence Award certificate and a $1000 USD award.

  • E-Newsletter - Each chapter member receives Focal Point — a quarterly electronic newsletter written for and by OSA Local Section and Student Chapter members from around the world.

  • OSA Collaborative Grants - OSA supports Student Chapters that organize collaborative activities between themselves and another funding body (such as a government agency or another professional society).  Ten grants of $250 each are available for these events each year.  Chapters must request the additional funding by emailing their event plans to chaptersandsections@osa.org.
